9 Aug 2008 - Dream Debut For Dom
A dream debut by another Kingswood 15 year old and some classic batting from Angus McCubbin made Lancaster Wanderers think they may have travelled too far.
The peak of The Wanderers' tour from Lancaster University came halfway through Kingswood`s innings. In the early overs, John Holcombe and Rob Marlow had dismissed Ben Foxwell and Rich Wilding, but Kevin Morgan and Jay Simmons had taken the score into the 60s by the 17th over. In seven balls Ed Holcombe removed Kevin for 39 and Tom Devine and Vince Taylor for ducks. 73 for 5 off 20 suggested a modest final total but Angus McCubbin changed the game in a partnership of 171 in 18 overs with Jay Simmons, whose patient 45 ended on 244 with a caught and bowled by Al Clabburn. Angus`s 135* came off just 79 balls with 17 fours and 6 sixes.
265 for 6 looked beyond the Wanderers, whose innings, like that of the Gavin Easthope XI the week before, was played in driving rain. Any Wanderers' hopes were swept away by 15 year old debutant, Dominic Avis. His first ball clean bowled John Holcombe. With his fourth he caught and bowled Al Clabburn. In his third and fourth overs he took Wideson and Moody`s wickets. His first spell for the club brought 4 for 11. Meanwhile, 16 year old Tom Devine had removed mature (?) student Rod Alexander. 27 for 5 did not look promising for the Wanderers and with the dismissal of Rob Marlow by Jamie Moran on 54, the innings looked all over. Skipper Gareth Coulter (71) and John Godfrey (24) rescued it from total embarrassment with an 89 partnership. before Jay Simmons and Vince Taylor shared the last three wickets on 151, a Kingswood win of 114
