13 Jul 2008 - The Chairman's Match

Fine batting and bowling performances late in each innings by Kingswood`s Chairman, veteran David Hatton, were not enough for victory against his Club in a high scoring game.

Kingswood`s innings of 299 for 8 owed much to Barry Morgan`s third century of the season, 132 off 103 balls. Brother Kevin and Angus McCubbin backed him up with 45 apiece and Ben Foxwell with 26. The bowlers had a hard day. The Chairman`s son-in-law, Nick Terrett, was the most successful with 3 for 50 but, Hatton`s 2 for 2 in his one and only over at the end of the innings suggested he had brought on himself modestly late.

For the first six overs of the reply Martin Scott`s 24, at a run a ball, looked a challenge; as did Tim Carter`s 29, of nudges, sweeps and deflections, but Angus McCubbin (2-14), Vince Taylor (3-19) and Jamie (1-46) and Steve (1-22) Moran seemed to have extinguished it at 114 for 7. Again, Hatton to the rescue. A fine 58 from Ed Holcombe, and his own unbeaten 30, gave a partnership of 91 and chance of victory. With Holcombe gone to Kevin Morgan, Hatton nursed the tail but, rather like a High Church priest in a struggling parish,he could not save it, as Kevin again and Mike Wilding finished it off for an 87 run victory.
